Jacob's Story
Jacob was being treated for persistent tendonitis in his right arm when, on Thanksgiving 2004, he fell and cracked his shoulder. X-rays of that shoulder revealed a tumor, an osteosarcoma. It is one of the most common bone cancers found in children.
Jacob started chemotherapy, but the cancer put a stop to most of his favorite activities. “I’ve always enjoyed playing ultimate Frisbee, kayaking and I love to play the clarinet and the bass,” Jacob said. “It got to the point where my arm was going to have to be amputated if a tissue donor was not found.”
In time, Jacob was very fortunate to receive a tissue donation and be a candidate for a procedure that prevented the amputation of his right arm. Through physical therapy and hard work, he regained full use of his right arm, enabling him to continue playing sports and music.
“I feel incredibly fortunate given the types of adversities I’ve faced growing up,” Jacob said. “I feel fortunate to still have my arm after seeing other kids in similar situations lose various limbs because of cancer.” Jacob is already helping other people, especially children, who have to deal with very difficult situations.
